Why HR belongs in Slack

Every HR team has the same problem: the answers exist, and nobody reads them. The handbook is thorough. The policy page is current. And still the same five questions arrive every week, because looking them up costs more attention than asking a person.

The interface is the product

An HR tool that lives behind a login is a tool people visit when they already know what they want. Most HR questions are not like that. They are small, immediate, and slightly embarrassing to ask out loud.

Slack is where those questions already happen. Putting the answer in the same place removes the only real barrier.

When there is an answer

The reply is built from your own Knowledge Base entries, matched against the question that was asked. Nobody is interrupted to produce it, and nobody has to be online for it to arrive.

That is the boring case, and boring is the point: a question that already has an answer stops costing anyone's attention.

When there is not

This is the half that matters more. A miss is not a dead end. The question is recorded as a Knowledge Gap, and the bot opens a direct message asking to be taught the answer so it can save it for next time. Keeping that handbook honest is the HR Head's job.

Here is the whole loop, in both places it happens:

#ask-hr

Anna

How do I expense a conference pass?

I don't have an answer for that — I'd suggest checking with your HR team directly.

In #ask-hr. No match in the Knowledge Base — the bot says so instead of guessing.

Hey — an employee just asked: "How do I expense a conference pass?"

I didn't have an answer. Can you teach me? Reply with the answer and I'll save it for next time. Or say 'dismiss' if it's not something I should know.

Saved. Next time someone asks, I'll have an answer for them. Thanks!

Meanwhile: a direct message to the first HR Head listed. One reply becomes the saved answer.

That message goes to one person — the first HR Head listed for the Workspace, not to all of them.

And when the same question comes back within a day, it is recorded again but does not send a second message, so a popular gap does not turn into a stream of interruptions.

A handbook nobody reads never tells you what is missing from it. A list of the questions it failed to answer does.
